The Long Journey
5.5Johannes V. Jensen
GBM Assessment (Score: 5.5/10)
Johannes V. Jensen received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1944 for his ambitious novel cycle tracing the sweep of human evolution from prehistoric origins to the modern age. This Danish epic anticipates the concerns of ecological fiction in its attention to humanity's relationship with the natural world. Though less widely read today outside Scandinavia, the work represents a bold attempt to encompass all of human development within a single literary framework.
Although Jensen began composing The Long Journey before the First World War, his Nobel recognition came during the Second World War, when Denmark was under German occupation. The epic's celebration of human resilience and adaptability carried particular resonance for a nation enduring foreign domination and searching for sources of cultural continuity.
