Selected Novellas
5Paul Heyse
GBM Assessment (Score: 5/10)
Paul Heyse's Selected Novellas represent the work of a German writer once celebrated as the foremost master of the novella form, though his reputation has faded considerably since his lifetime. Heyse was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1910 in recognition of his prolific output and his consummate craftsmanship within the novella genre, but his work is now largely forgotten outside specialist literary circles.
Writing during the Bismarck era and the early decades of the German Empire, Heyse was a central figure in the Munich literary circle and enjoyed enormous popularity among his contemporaries. His award of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1910 recognized a body of work that, while technically accomplished, has not endured in the wider literary canon.
