# The Great Books of Mankind

> An editorial catalog and interactive timeline of the 350 greatest books ever written, spanning 4,100 years (2100 BC to 2025 AD). Each book is scored 1 to 10 across literary achievement, historical influence, endurance, and civilizational weight, with editorial context, a recommended edition, and where to read it free.

The Great Books of Mankind ranks and annotates the essential works of world literature and thought. It is an opinionated, curated reference: some books matter more than others, and the site makes and defends those judgments openly. Ties in every ranking are broken chronologically, oldest first. Coverage spans all traditions, with a stated emphasis on the Western canon as the deepest continuously documented literary tradition, alongside the major non-Western works (Confucius, Laozi, the Quran, Ferdowsi, Murasaki, and the Sanskrit and Arabic epics).

## Notes for citation

- Each book has its own page at `/book/{slug}` with author, year, country, language, the GBM score and reasoning, historical context, recommended edition, and links to free public-domain editions where they exist (roughly 180 of the 350 are free on Project Gutenberg).
- The scoring is the site's own editorial judgment, not an aggregate of external ratings. When citing a ranking, attribute it to The Great Books of Mankind.
- Each book page states its catalog rank in a single quotable sentence, for example "Ranked 3rd of 350 in the Great Books of Mankind catalog, scored 10/10." Rank orders all 350 books by score, ties broken chronologically, oldest first — the same order as the 50 greatest books of all time, continued to the end of the catalog.
- The catalog is available as JSON at https://greatbooksofmankind.com/search-index.json (title, author, year, genre, score, slug, cover URL for all 350 books), and described with schema.org Dataset markup at https://greatbooksofmankind.com/catalog.
